Suddenly the "superbug" MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is in the news. Almost every day for the last couple of weeks, there have been a multiple stories focusing on the latest outbreak this antibiotic resistant bacteria. Although certainly not at Avian Flu levels of hysteria, it's getting more play than any bug since bird flu first hit the news two years ago. But while the media seems to have suddenly discovered MRSA, readers of the Baseline of Health Newsletter learned all about this bacteria over a year and a half ago.

A just released study of 1,093 patients treated for head and neck cancer showed that their state of mind had no influence on their outcomes. Or to put it simply, having a positive attitude, had no impact on survival.

In reporting the study, WebMD quoted Dr. Jimmie Holland from Sloan-Kettering, who coined the phrase "the tyranny of positive thinking." Commenting on the study, Dr. Holland said, "The idea that we can control illness and death with our minds appeals to our deepest yearnings, but it just isn't so. It is so sad that cancer patients are made to believe that if they aren't doing well it is somehow their own fault because they aren't positive enough."

Well, there you go. Just when you think you've heard everything. A recent study out of Duke University has found that blood transfusions increase your risk of heart attack and death. Now, no one's saying that a blood transfusion isn't helpful after a massive loss of blood, but the study confirms that the simple act of getting a transfusion absolutely increases your risk of having a heart attack and dying shortly after. In other words, in many cases, blood transfusions may do more harm than good.

I read your article on antioxidants and ORAC scoring and I'm confused. Does an ORAC score measure one antioxidant or is it an accumulated combination of antioxidants in a particular fruit? If it's accumulated, how do you know how much of each antioxidant contributes toward your final score?
