Fluoride in our Water: Health Blog

In the last two weeks more than 600 professionals have urged Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted. They cite new scientific evidence that fluoridation, long promoted to fight tooth decay, is ineffective and has serious health risks.

Supporters include a Nobel Prize winner, three members of the prestigious 2006 National Research Council (NRC) panel that reported on fluoride's toxicology, two officers in the Union representing professionals at EPA headquarters, the President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment, and hundreds of medical, dental, academic, scientific and environmental professionals, worldwide.

Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine, says, "Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology."

Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director of the Fluoride Action Network, announced, "The NRC report dramatically changed scientific understanding of fluoride's health risks. Government officials who continue to promote fluoridation must testify under oath as to why they are ignoring the powerful evidence of harm.”

The Professionals' Statement also references:

  • The new American Dental Association policy recommending infant formula not be prepared with fluoridated water.
  • The CDC's concession that the predominant benefit of fluoride is topical not systemic.
  • CDC data showing that dental fluorosis, caused by fluoride over-exposure, now impacts one third of American children.
  • Major research indicating little difference in decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.
  • A Harvard study indicating a possible link between fluoridation and bone cancer.
  • The silicofluoride chemicals used for fluoridation are contaminated industrial waste and have never been FDA-approved for human ingestion.

But fluoride isn’t just added to our water. It’s also added to almost all of the toothpaste we buy. Take a moment and look at your toothpaste label. If it’s got fluoride in it, it will advise you to call a poison control center immediately if swallowed.

The CDC’s own website cites concentrations of 1000-1500 parts per million – way past those in water! And many people brush with toothpaste 2-3 times a day.

And yet, fluoride still has its advocates such as Dr. Poki Namkung, the health officer for Santa Cruz County. According to Dr. Namkung, “Opponents [of fluoride] routinely misquote scientific studies, take comments out of context and misinterpret the results.”  That “may” indeed be true. But if so, it would merely be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Make no mistake, fluoride’s advocates, such as Dr. Namkung, absolutely misquote scientific studies, take comments out of context and misinterpret the results. (He really should read the NRC panel report on fluoride.) To paraphrase, Geena Davis in The Fly, when it comes to fluoride, “Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

OVER FIFTY YEARS AGO AT IOWA STATE COLLEGE, I
GAVE A CONVINCING SPEECH TO FELLOW STUDENTS
ABOUT NOT ALLOWING FLUORIDATION. AT THAT TIME IT WAS THOUGHT TO BE A CUMULATIVE POISON.

TAKING INFORMATON FROM THE "MORRISON'S FEEDS &
FEEDING" TEXT, I CITED THE MOTTLING OF TEETH AND
BONES IN CATTLE AT AGES 1/6TH TO 1/8TH OF
HUMAN LIFE SPAN. AS I REMEMBER, THE CLASS
AGREED WITH ME THAT IT WOULD BE DETRIMENTAL
TO US AS WE AGE.

DES WAS ALSO REJECTED AS A GROWTH HORMONE BY
THE COLLEGE,BECAUSE IT WAS FOUND TO CARRY
THROUGH TO THE END USER. MONEY EVIDENTALLY
GOT IT BACK IN OUR BEEF TODAY. COULD THIS BE

Hello Jon, my ex wife and son are under the impression that the filter on the refridgerator will remove any floride from the water and even if she changes the filter every couple of months would keep it safe to drink. Is this so? I told her that she would be better off drinking distilled water from Wall Mart. I do thank you for your response. As always I think your article on Stevia was excellent, keep up the great research~
I do bless you and yours In Yahweh,
RC

Unless the inline refrigerator filter you buy specifically states that it removes fluoride, it won't. Inline fluoride flters for refrigerators are available, but they are not the norm. It's also worth noting that the standard inline filter won't remove things like heavy metals, bacteria, and cryptosporidium. The standard inline filter is a very low-level basic filter -- primarily improving taste more than health.

I would just like to say that the John Tesh show on 97.3 ,the Georgian radio station, promotes the drinking of tap water, and one reason he promotes it is because there is flouride added to it. People take what he says as gospel truth and it worries me when bad inforamtion like this is spoken on a show that is so widely listened to as his. Thank you for this report. I am writing the John Tesh show and sending him this information.
